Traditional vinegar and water  is a popular solution, however, vinegar is acidic and can break down a finish over time.

The less frequently you need to  refinish your floor, the more durable your hardwood floor will remain. Some prefer to skip the refinishing altogether, enjoying the nostalgic feel of the timeworn rustic look that develops over the years.
